Mr. Balamurugan hailed from Munalur, a small town located 110 kilometres from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. His grandfather was a farmer. His father sold ready-made garments at the weekly outdoor village markets. Mr. V Balamurugan's childhood was spent travelling with his father from village to village selling ready-made clothing. His town did not have a college, so students from his town had to travel to larger towns to pursue their degrees. Mr. Balamurugan could not afford to leave his town for graduation, so he was forced to stop his education after completing high school.
In his early teens, Mr. Balamurugan had to assume the role of sole breadwinner and support his family due to extreme financial circumstances.
Mr. Balamurugan was exceptionally enterprising, diligent, and focused. He continuously pursued odd opportunities that presented themselves. He briefly took up a distribution agency for popular local newspapers. By the time he was 25 years old, he had amassed substantial savings, and in 1996 he opened a small ready-to-wear store in his hometown. In 1997-1998, he was given the opportunity to supply school uniforms to the Mafatlal group after establishing a retail store with limited visibility. This was a significant breakthrough. After supplying to the Mafatlal group for three years, Mr. Balamurugan decided to end the relationship because the payment terms had become extremely unfavourable, margins had been squeezed, and he did not receive the respect he deserved as a vendor.
Mr. Balamurugan was ambitious and eager for expansion. In 2004, at the age of 33, he realised that he needed to move to a larger city in order to satisfy his growth, and he moved to Coimbatore.
He pursued contracts directly with schools for school uniforms. Mr. Balamurugan has earned a good reputation in the wholesale fabric markets where he used to purchase fabrics in bulk. From the start, he was extremely disciplined regarding his payment obligations and financial management.
Through his acquaintance, he got an opportunity to supply uniforms to Ambal Auto, a Maruti dealership. Subsequently, he had the opportunity to supply uniforms to one of the Coimbatore TVS service centres. Moreover, during an internal audit, that TVS service centre received the highest rating for uniform. Subsequently, TVS motors approached him directly after seeing his quality, service, and pricing. He was called to the Hosur factory and they gave him a 10-day deadline to supply 26 service centres in Chennai.
Mr. Balamurugan did not wish to miss out on this opportunity, so he accepted the challenge. He had faith in him and was certain he could complete the task. He travelled alone to Chennai and took measurements of all employees centre by centre. Thankfully, because of his reputation with fabric wholesalers, he got the credit to purchase high-quality material. He hired independent tailors and inspired them to do their best, and they all supported him wholeheartedly.
He took the uniforms to Chennai by train and, over the next two days, distributed them to all 26 centres. Officials at TVS were very impressed with Mr. Balamurugan's work and listed his firm as a preferred vendor. Today, the relationship is over 18 years old, and he is the exclusive uniform supplier for all TVS group facilities in India and Africa.
Mr. Balamurugan's company, Colour Land Clothing, now provides uniforms for all of the leading automobile manufacturers' dealers and service centres. Among his clients are Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Honda, Ford, Hyundai, Mahindra, Renault, and Ashok Leyland.
To be a supplier to some of the top original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), a company must be professional, process-oriented, competitively priced, maintain consistent quality, provide the highest level of service, and have excellent client management.
Mr. Balamurugan, despite being an undergraduate, was an avid learner and he equipped himself to handle clients professionally. Mr. Balamurugan has always understood that in order to be a long-term player, he must provide high-quality fabrics. He was required to strike a delicate balance between price and quality. He purchased fabrics of the highest quality from Ahmedabad and other cities. The uniforms manufactured by Colour Land Clothing did not fade for up to two years.
Mr. Balamurugan learned that in order to retain the patronage of these reputable businesses, he needed to be very particular about their logo branding. Accordingly, he assembled an in-house design team of Embroidery professionals.
Due to the labor-intensive nature of uniform production and the fact that all uniforms are custom-tailored, he knew that his tailoring team must be readily available. To ensure this, he converted the contract workers into full-time employees. He went above and beyond to facilitate a healthy work-life balance for his team members. Colour Land Clothing has the lowest attrition rate compared to other textile units. Today, they have a 100-person team.
The journey from a chanced opportunity to becoming the leading manufacturer of uniforms for the automotive industry required intensity, deliberate actions, grit, and determination. Mr Balamurugan has now set a goal to be the no 1 automotive uniform manufacturer in the country.
