Business Journey

Mr. Sivaramakrishnan began his entrepreneurial endeavours after earning his MBA. He received a job offer from Tata Press and accepted it. Mr. Sivaramakrishnan had a desire to move abroad and settle there. However, his father persuaded him to stay in Tiruchirappalli and manage the family business. He returned to Tiruchirappalli after a few years after working in the corporate sector.

His father managed a rice milling unit. Mr. Sivaramakrishnan, who was skilled in sales and marketing, did not find the rice milling business alluring in its early years. Since it was a commodity, brand loyalty did not exist. As a result of the government's policy of providing free rice and the fact that 80% of the rice is picked up by its agencies, marketing of it had its difficulties.

His initial restlessness led him to a distribution opportunity for FMCG products. Vodafone invited him to distribute SIM cards in light of his accomplishments. He also got to distribute DuPont Seeds. The opportunity to distribute Bridgestone tyres resulted from his success in the automotive service. He opened a petrol pump as well. He was relishing the performance pressure and thoroughly appreciating this phase. He was now doing this for nearly 14 Yrs. These businesses provided him with enormous exposure.

Mr. Sivaramakrishnan was required to assume administrative control as his father's involvement at the rice mill diminished. At that time, the majority of his other businesses were well-established and ran on autopilot.

This time, he made it clear that he did not wish to continue as a commodity player and was seeking diversification and brand development. Nearly sixty daily wage earners relied on their mill for sustenance at the time, and his father advised him to look after them.

Mr. Sivaramakrishnan considered diversifying into millets in 2016 because he had a strong sense that millets would become popular in the consumer market. Initially, he procured from the Theni market and distributed in Trichy in order to gain familiarity with this category of goods. However, he eventually realised that the grains he purchased in those markets were not 100 percent pure and contained rice. Since he was particular about his reputation, he considered entering the millet milling industry immediately.

As he progressed, he came to realise that rice milling and millet milling were fundamentally opposed and lacked synergies. Rather, the process of millet milling was in its infancy. He enrolled in every course that was available and consulted with every possible expert in this field.

Mr. Sivaramakrishnan had a passion for learning and was constantly in search of new challenges. In roughly two years, he had a fully operational milling unit, but he still believes there is room for further automation. In 2017, his wife Mrs Anuradha S joined the company. Mrs. Anuradha was a BCom graduate who also holds an MBA in HR.

Mrs. Anuradha's joining provided Mr. Sivaramakrishnan with a tremendous boost. Mrs. Anuradha assumed responsibility for some of the organization's most critical responsibilities, including research, product development, human resources management, and financial management. Despite the fact that this was Mrs. Anuradha's first full-time job, she handled the responsibilities with great skill. She swiftly balances her domestic and professional obligations.

In 2018, Mr. Sivaramakrishnan and Mrs. Anuradha registered The Bliss Tree as a trademark.

However, there was no demand for the millet grains when they were presented to wholesalers and retailers. Retailers preferred it in the form of flour. Then, they required precooked and snacks.

The Bliss Tree developed corresponding manufacturing processes to meet these demands over time. In time, the company expanded into instant mixes, baking, snacks, and cold-pressed oil.

The grain-processing facility at The Bliss Tree has been transformed into a food-processing facility.

This transformation required a substantial amount of capital, but their faith in millets' potential compelled them to continue.

Since it was now abundantly clear that they did not wish to be a commodity player, they focused heavily on branding, positioning, packaging, and distribution, among other aspects.

In addition, they were aware that the Indian domestic millet market is in its infancy and will lack the necessary momentum. Mr. Sivaramakrishnan focused his entire effort on the export market. On both the east and west coasts, they established warehouses. They selected and nurtured retailers and distributors across the USA.

Domestically, they have developed the capacity to provide 40-foot container loads from their own production. This capacity also allowed them to supply to other brands under their own labels.

They recently reached an exclusive agreement with Lulu Supermarkets that grants them access to middle east.

The self-funded The Bliss Tree Brand venture has completed 5 Years and has already generated Rs 25 crore in revenue. With its capabilities, domain expertise, presence in 80% of the value chain, and other compelling USPs, The Bliss Tree brand is well-positioned to dominate the millet market and become a home grown global player.
